After Yusuf’s exit, 21 Kano assembly members move from NNPP to APC
Twenty-one members of the Kano state house of assembly have defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major realignment in the state’s political landscape.
The lawmakers announced their defection on Monday, days after Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, formally resigned from the NNPP.
Yusuf’s resignation followed his recent meeting with Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
In a letter addressed to the chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi ward in Gwale LGA, the governor said his decision was informed by “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” within the party.
The governor exited the NNPP alongside the 21 lawmakers of the Kano state assembly, eight members of the house of representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
Among those who defected are Jibril Ismail Falgore, speaker representing Rogo, and Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, deputy speaker representing Tofa/Rimin Gado.
Others include Lawan Hussain, majority leader representing Dala; Garba Shehu Fammar, deputy majority leader representing Kibiya; and Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki, chief whip representing Kumbotso.
Also listed are Zakariyya Abdullahi Nuhu, majority whip representing Gabasawa; Lawal Tini of Ajingi; Musa Tahir Haruna of Albasu; Ali Lawan Alhassan of Bagwai/Shanono; Ali Muhammad Tiga of Bebeji; Hafiz Gambo of Bunkure; and Rabiu Shuaibu of Dawakin Kudu.
Further defectors are Tukur Mohammed of Fagge, Murtala Muhammad Kadage of Garko, Abdulmajid Isah Umar of Gwale, Ahmad Ibrahim of Karaye, Alhassan Zakari of Kura/Garun Malam, and Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq of Madobi.
Abdulhamid Abdul of Minjibir, Muhammad Ibrahim of Rano, Kabiru Sule Dahiru of Tarauni, and Ali Abdullahi Manager of Wudil completed the list.
Reacting to Yusuf’s defection, Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the NNPP, described January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”.
Kwankwaso had played a key role in Yusuf’s emergence as Kano governor in the 2023 election through the Kwankwasiyya movement.
