AfroBasket 2025: Tinubu hails D’Tigress for fifth straight final appearance

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, for reaching the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket for the fifth consecutive time.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Tinubu praised the resilience and dominance of the reigning African champions.

D’Tigress defeated Senegal 75–68 at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, securing their seventh consecutive victory over their long-time rivals.

“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” Tinubu said.

The president also commended Rena Wakama, head coach of the team, for her impact on the team’s progress.

“I especially commend Rena Wakama, the team’s first female head coach, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” he said.

Tinubu assured the team of his support as they push for a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall.
