Adebayor makes history with Copa Libertadores debut
Emmanuel Adebayor on Wednesday made history when he became the second Togolese to play in the Copa Libertadores, the South American Champions League.
Adebayor came in as a second half substitute in CD Olimpia’s 1-1 draw with Ecuador’s Delfin SC.

He replaced former Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz.
The first Togolese to play in Copa Libertadores was Hamilton Hênio Ferreira Calheiros, a naturalized Brazilian who had played at Colo Colo (Chile) in 2009. At the same time, he became the 27th African to compete in this tournament. The first was Ghanaian John Yawson who turned out for Penarol.
Adebayor has played in the prestigious UEFA Champions League with Monaco, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Istanbul Basaksehir.
In February, the 34-year-old journeyman signed a one year contract with Paraguayan side and has been tasked with helping the club reclaim the local league as well as compete strongly in the Copa Libertadores.
