ADC urges Peter Obi to decide on joining party amid zoning concerns

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to make a swift decision on whether he intends to join the party’s emerging coalition.

Obi had recently expressed concerns that the coalition was faltering, particularly over its inability to agree on zoning and rotation of key offices.

He, however, maintained confidence in the calibre of leaders involved, including former Senate President David Mark and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Responding, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi told Punch that zoning is not yet on the coalition’s agenda, insisting the party’s immediate priority is convincing Nigerians that it offers a credible alternative.

He said the ADC would not pressure Obi into joining but encouraged him to state his intentions clearly. Abdullahi emphasised that while they want Obi onboard, the coalition must first strengthen its structures and message before considering zoning arrangements.

He dismissed Obi’s suggestion that the coalition was unstable, noting the party had successfully established offices in about 28 states in five months without holding political positions.

Abdullahi urged Obi to contribute to building the party’s presence in Anambra, as other leaders have done in their states, saying the ADC remains eager to have him as part of its growth.
