ACCA building finance professionals in Nigerian institutions

Identifying importance of professional accountants in achieving sustainable economic growth through effective contributions from finance professionals, Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) has recorded another milestone in equipping Nigerian accountant student in various tertiary institutions across the country with professional tools.

The global professional body for Accountants at the seminar organized recently in Kano, titled: ‘Polytechnic Connect’, believed it is very necessary at this crucial point in the Nigeria economy to develop finance professionals from schools through capacity building for accountant students from Northern Nigeria Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

According to the Business Relationships Manager, ACCA, Abuja, Mrs. Evelyn Isioye, this is aimed at preparing the students for the future, equipping them with basic tools and knowledge needed to become professional accountants that will be globally relevant.

The participants, were equipped with skills that would enable them gain special recognition during an interview such as how to draft a comprehensive CV, interview skills what to do and what not to do during an interview, relevant information about how to become employable after graduation as well as how to develop one’s self to fit into any given opportunity.

Commenting on scholarships for outstanding students, Esioye stated that the professional body does not grant scholarship but that there are other professional bodies willing to partner with ACCA to give out scholarship.

It would be recalled that the global professional body successful signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Babcock University in October 2015, and made it became the first ACCA accredited private university in Nigeria.

However, the body had promised to build capacity for the university internally and proposed engaging the lecturers of the university who were interested in becoming ACCA certified to offer them differentiated support to enable their success via the Tutor Excellence Program; which may not require academics to sit and pass ACCA exams in order to begin teaching the qualification.

Meanwhile, part of the highlights of the Kano’s workshop, included a quiz competition which representatives from six various schools participated. Muhammad Zahraddeen from Kano State Polytechnic came first with 20,000 naira cash prize and a trophy, Olawoye Blessing Oluwapelumi from COE Mina came second and went home with the token of 15,000 Naira and a trophy while Collins Simon from Nuhu Bamali Zaria Accounting Dept HND 2 went home with the some of 10,000 naira cash prize and a trophy

The workshop was attended by about 300 students from Nuhu Bamali Zaria, College of Education Mina, Federal Polytechnic Namuda Zamfara, Niger State Polytechnic Federal Polytechnic Gboko and Kano State Polytechnic respectively.
