Abuja Community Gives AEDC 3-Day Ultimatum to Reverse Huge Bills

Residents of Dutsen Alhaji and Sokale, in Bwari Local Government Council Area, in Federal Capital Territory, have given the authority of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) a three-day ultimatum to cut down what they described as outrageous electricity bills or face action that would have negative effect on the operations of the company.

The residents, under the umbrella of Dutse/Sokale Community Concern Group, has already directed its members not to pay the bills unless the company reverses.

The group, in what it termed a warning protest, on Monday, stormed the streets, protesting against the increase.

The chairman of the group, Mr. James Amosu, said: “Why will AEDC suddenly increase electricity bill, when we don’t even have light for close to four hours a day. Now, those who have been paying N2, 000 monthly, for electricity, are now paying over N6, 000, even when power supply is not constant. This is not acceptable, and that is why we are protesting.”

He urged all the residents who received the outrageous bill not to pay pending the outcome of the meeting of the concerned residents slated for Saturday this week at the LGA primary school Dutsen Alhaji.

Amosu expressed worry that Nigerian workers were paying much on electricity bill and fuel, even when their salaries were very low, urging the in-coming administration, led by Gen. Muhammandu Buhari, to develop a progamme that would ameliorate the sufferings of the people.
