Abia NCWS wants equal right, not 35% affirmation

The 35 percent affirmation on women by the 1995 Beijing Women Conference is no longer ideal, hence the need for equality right for women in the contemporary times, says the Abia state chapter the National Council of Women Society (NCWS).

Speaking at the Women Development Centre Umuahia, a notable member and the Abia state Commissioner for Transport, Barr Nnenna Obewu Onwuka, stated this in Umuahia shortly after arising from a meeting of the NCWS pointing out that the earlier affirmation on women won’t hold ground any more pointing out that equal rights should extend to women folk in view of performance and quality representation in all sphere of leadership.

The commissioner said “I don’t believe in 35 percent affirmation on women any longer. What is important most is quality representations and productivity.”

She however expressed appreciated with the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, for standing tall above other governors in terms of women appointments in the cabinet and other exalted positions in his administration and charged women to rise above board and bring to bear the desired given talents bestowed on them by God.

Also speaking, the Chairman Electoral Committee of Abia NCWS, Chief Mrs. Glory Uruakpa observed that the affirmation on women during Beijing Conference of 1995 is fizzling out considering the positions women occupies globally and called on Government in the state to continue to encourage women in the State by giving more than 35 percent positions to women in its cabinet in the state to them.

Chief Mrs. Uruakpa used the opportunity explain that their gathering was to plan for the NCWS State Council Election expected to hold in the State soon.

According to her, NCWS was faring well in the State under their patron and wife of the Governor Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu, pointing out that the Council was growing from strength to strength and that part of their deliberation was to acquaint members with information and activities concerning the election as well as other state matters bordering NCWS both at Local Government and State levels.

The meeting which comprises Chairmen and Secretaries of 17 Local Governments in the State according to Chief Mrs. Uruakpa was also meant to educate women on what was expected of them to do in their individual homes, create awareness on how to manage families in the present day economic recession as well as to help the less privileged and indigent ones among them.

Also speaking after the event, the immediate former Transition Committee Chairman, Umunneochi Local Government Area, Hon. Ijeoma Okorie commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and his wife Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu for been supportive of NCWS in the State, stating that Mrs. Ikpeazu deserves the commendation of members of NCWS for single handedly encouraging the affairs of the Council financially, assured her of NCWS unflinching support in the state.
