Aare Gani Adams vows to strengthen Yoruba unity through OPU

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yodubaland Aare Gani Adams over the weekend said that he will continue to use the Oodua Progressive Union, OPU to strengthen the bond of unity and economic integration of all Yoruba Indigenes across the world.

Aare Gani Adams said this in Abeokuta while delivering a keynote address at the 4th World Congress of Oodua Progressive Union held at the Centenary Hall, Abeokuta Ogun State.

Aare Adams said OPU which remains an integral part of Oodua Peoples’ Congress will strive to create an enabling platform for socio economic integration among members.

His words, “As an organization, we intend to strengthen the bond of unity and we are poised to use all our network for the common interest of the Yoruba race.”

The guest lecturer at the event Dr Sojj Fajenyo of department of Yoruba, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta called on Yoruba leaders to remain focus in the agitation for the unity and restructuring of Nigeria as a panacea for rapid development of Yoruba race.

Speaking on the topic “Unity and Restructuring as the way forward to progress in Yorubaland: The Roles of the Yorubas in Diaspora”, Dr Fajenyo called for the decentralisation of power saying that the Federal government should allow the component states to have a say in the power structure of Nigerian society.

“Power should be shared equally between the Federal government and the component units”.

“The State or regional government should be allowed to control or annex the resources in their area and give remittance to the Federal or central government “.

The guest lecturer also called on all Yoruba leaders to promote the language and culture saying as “Yorubas they should advocate for continuous bearing traditional Yoruba names such Omiyefa, Aderemi Akanbi adding that “it will help to trace our source and this will eventually bring unity”.

OPU members from about 79 countries of the world attended the three-day event.
