A/Ibom distributes relief materials to fire victims

Akwa Ibom state has donated relief materials to victims of the fire outbreak which occurred early this at the Yoruba fishing settlement in Iwokpom community in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.

Presenting the relief materials at the weekend, the state Deputy Governor, Moses Ekpo expressed his sympathy to victims who lost their valuable property in the fire disaster.


Items donated include 127 bags of rice, 38 bags of beans, 127 bags of flour, 127 bags of garri, 127 bags of maize and 379 pieces of treated mosquito nets.

Other relief materials are mattresses, wrappers, brocades, bundles of zinc, 379 bags of cement and 183 ceiling boards among others.

Ekpo said that the relief materials were the first batch and assured the victims that the second batch would be released soon.

“Those who lost their houses in the inferno that happened on January 3, state government is looking into it to be able to supplement cash in due course,” Ekpo said.

He reassured the victims that the state government is making plans to rehabilitate them, adding that “the state government will continue to do its best to provide rehabilitation to fire victims at Iwuokpom community at Ibeno Local Government Area.”

Ekpo regretted that the fire inferno destroyed property worth millions of naira, adding that there would be a lot of support from the state government.

He appealed to Mobil Producing to visit the fire victims as a responsible corporate citizen by donating relief materials to the affected victims and appreciated the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the state emergency agency for conducting an on the spot assessment when they visited the fire victims.

Also speaking, a Community Leader in Ibeno Local Government Area, Isaac Abakam, expressed appreciation to the state government for giving relief materials to the fire victims.
