Towards a cohesive Nigeria: Reimagining state development priorities

By Abayomi Odunowo

In Nigeria, the divergence in development priorities among its states is stark and deeply concerning. As we survey the nation, it becomes painfully evident that some states are racing ahead while others seem to be ensnared in a quagmire of stagnation or regression.

This phenomenon can be traced back to varying priorities set by state governments and their constituents, with substantial resources allocated to ceremonial or less impactful projects rather than the pressing issues that could lead to monumental development.

For instance, Kano’s ₦2.5 billion for a mass wedding contrasts sharply with Lagos’s ₦3.5 billion directed toward improving power supply. The disparity in focus reveals a troubling trend: while some governments prioritize immediate ceremonial gratification, others understand the strategic imperative of investing in sustainable growth.

This divergence not only accentuates inequality but also erodes the potential for collective progress across the nation.

The ramifications are severe. The allocation of significant funds to non-essential projects such as mass weddings or religious infrastructure often comes at the expense of critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructural development.

For instance, Jigawa has earmarked ₦4.8 billion for Ramadan feeding, which, while providing immediate relief to its citizens, can hardly be deemed a sustainable solution to poverty alleviation or food security. In contrast, states like Anambra and Enugu are focused on long-term investments in technology and infrastructure with their ₦2.7 billion and ₦3 billion budgets for the construction of an ICT Centre and Digital Village, respectively.

This inconsistency reveals an unsettling reality: while some states are taking significant steps toward modernization and growth, others remain ensnared in cycles of short-termism that will likely lead to chronic underdevelopment. Such disparities inevitably foster resentment, undermining the national cohesion essential for a robust and unified Nigeria.

The question arises: How can we align our priorities to ensure that the entire nation progresses uniformly? When states emphasize immediate gratification over critical issues like education, healthcare, and infrastructure, they not only jeopardize their own development but also weaken the collective potential of Nigeria. This brings us to a vital and constructive dialogue: for Nigeria to achieve monumental development and progress, we must collectively refocus on essential issues that uplift our society.

The federal and state governments should prioritize investments that yield sustainable returns and uplift the quality of life of their citizens. Initiatives such as comprehensive educational reform, improved healthcare systems, enhanced infrastructural development, and sustainable economic policies must be the guiding principles for all states.

One compelling approach involves incentivizing states to allocate resources toward sustainable development projects. By creating a framework of accountability where financial support is contingent on a state’s commitment to fundamental issues, we can gradually shift the focus away from showcase projects toward impactful developments.

For example, instead of funding mass weddings or mosque renovations, resources could support job creation initiatives, technology incubators, and agricultural advancements that address food security concerns in states like Kebbi. Additionally, inter-state collaborations could serve as a catalyst for collective action. States that excel in education or technology can share best practices and resources with others lagging behind.

This collaborative strategy would foster a spirit of unity, creating a more equitable framework for development across Nigeria.

While the discrepancies in state priorities remain alarming, they also present an opportunity for reflection and redirection. Nigeria stands at a crossroads where its beautiful diversity can either lead it to a divisive future or create a vibrant tapestry of progress through shared priorities and aspirations.

For monumental development to materialize, we must eschew short-term thinking in favor of investment in essential issues. Concrete action, strategic prioritization, and collaborative effort will lead us to a more prosperous and equitable Nigeria for generations to come.

As we move forward, let us remember: our true strength lies in unity and our collective resolve to prioritize meaningful development initiatives over transient desires.
