93% voters collect PVCs in Kaduna – INEC Commissioner

Less than one week to the rescheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections, close to one hundred per cent of registered voters in Kaduna State have collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC), Daily Times checks revealed.

Similarly, while about 30,000 ad-hoc staff have been engaged and trained preparatory to the elections, delivery of card readers including other materials needed for the conduct of the democratic exercise have been taken from the National Headquarters of INEC, Abuja and distributed to the twenty-three local government areas of the state.

In an interview at the weekend, Kaduna State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji  Hussaini Ahmed Mahuta, disclosed that while a total of 3,414,250 voters were registered in Kaduna State,  INEC  in the state had received 3,382,186 PVCs for distribution to their owners.

Out of the number, he said 3,145,037 have been collected by their owners leaving a balance of 237,149 cards to be collected, as at the time of filing this story.

The Commissioner, who put the collection rate of PVC in Kaduna State at “93 per cent”, informed that “the remaining cards that have not been collected are with our local government electoral officers” just as “efforts are being made to print some cards and send them to Kaduna “.

He said though they are still distributing the PVC, he dismissed the possibility of everybody getting the cards, arguing that “this registration was done 4 years ago. Within the last 4 years, some people have died and others have move from Kaduna to another state. We think the cards that remains with us now may not be unconnected with these development.

“We are set for the election because we have finished our recruitment. About 30,000 ad-hoc staff are engaged and in fact, we have trained them, particularly those of them who will handle card readers in the field.

“Already, we have gotten 7,049 card readers. Besides, we have backup of 3 per local government in case of any problem so that they can be deployed to assist. We have got our materials and sent to local governments”, the commissioner announced as he vouched the commission’s readiness to give Nigerians credible elections, saying “we will do our best”.

Speaking further, Mahuta advised eligible voters with their PVC to ensure they go to the place where they were registered to cast their vote if they happen to change their locations.

He explained that they will not be allowed to vote in the new place because “the cards that they are holding are dedicated to polling units”.
