2018 WCQ: Iceland Makes History

Iceland are not new to breaking records. They also know what it tastes like to have the odds against them. They have done it again and picked a spot in Russia

Iceland beat Kosovo 2-0 to qualify for their first ever World Cup.

A Nordic island nation in Europe, Iceland is now the first country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup with a population less than one million.

The total population of the country is about 335,000, less than the population of Ikorodu Town in Lagos, Nigeria.

Iceland showed the world their quality when they surprisingly reached the quarter finals of Euro 2016, beating star-studded England in the round of 16.

Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson calmed nerves with a neat finish just before half-time and then provided an assist for Burnley’s Johann Gudmundsson to secure a 2-0 win on Monday.

They have won seven of their 10 Group I games in World Cup qualifying. Other teams in the group include: Turkey and Croatia.
