2015: Why PDP Is Combative

Indications have emerged on why the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been very aggressive in its campaign for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Contrary to insinuations that the ruling party is mortally afraid of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), hence its combative campaigns against it, the PDP is not afraid of APC one bit, it has been learnt.
Reliable sources close to the top hierarchy of the party in Abuja told Daily Times that the aggressive nature of its campaign was dictated by the unusual approach of the main opposition party in its propaganda to blackmail the ruling party ahead of the elections. According to the source, what also informed the massive nature of its campaigns was the fact that a lot was at stake in this election.
“Despite the fact that we know that we are stronger and with more spread in the country that the opposition, we did not want to take anything for granted in every aspect of the electioneering campaigns and the wooing of the voters across Nigeria,” the source said.
This, he said accounted for the deployment of everything at the disposal of the party to counter the opposition whom he described as a virus capable of destroying the stability of the country if it comes to power. “Essentially, when it comes to the preservation of the unity of the country, no responsible government would take it light with anything like to threaten it, hence, all the steps being taken by our party to ensure victory at the polls.
“It is not that we are afraid of losing, but a lot is at stake including the unity and stability of the country. We owe the people the responsibility of ensuring the continuous preservation of the country as a united entity, so we have to take any step deemed necessary to achieve this, otherwise, our country could be doomed,” he stressed.
This is the first time in the history of this nation that it appears that the opposition is capable of obtaining victory in an election over an incumbent government at the federal level which has accounted for the unusual nature of the campaign by the parties. This is moreso when the ruling party had once described itself as the biggest party in Africa with the capacity to continue to rule Nigeria for the next 60 years.
But the reality has now dawned on the PDP that it is possible that the opposition can snatch victory from them in this forthcoming election especially with the united and aggressive nature that the opposition has taken it on in the last few years. The beneficiary in all of these scenarios has been the electorate that has in the last six weeks received a lot of attention and consideration from both the opposition and the ruling party which nobody ever believed was possible.
