This may be the end of the road for 17 year old Chiemeriem Benjamin, an S.S.1 student who drew the curtain close on her dream of becoming a banker when she allegedly murdered her friend, 17 year old Lawrence Oloruntobi.

The shocking incident which took place at the Iba area of Lagos State has since changed the phase of life for the teenager who hails from Abia State.

The suspect, who spoke with Daily Times, tells the story of how what she described as a casual exchange of word with the deceased led her to the homicide section of the Panti Divisional Police.

“Lawrence was my friend; we grew up together and have lived in the same neighbourhood  for as long as I can remember. But on that fateful day, I discovered I was not in the mood to talk with him. When I came out in the morning he tried to pull some jokes which ordinarily we would have laughed over, but I just told him I was not interested in such jokes. I went out later in the day and on my way  back, I saw him trying to force  my younger brother to play in stagnant pool in front of our compound.

“My younger brother was crying for help because he did not want to be dragged into the muddy pool. On seeing that, I quickly walked up to Lawrence to stop him. He took it personal and threatened to slap my face.

“Out of anger, I said even his mother would not dare slap my face. He then reached for a cane, which had always been what he does whenever he has misunderstanding with anyone. I also rushed into our room to pick up a knife. Fortunately, my elder brother and a neighbour called Iya Ayo intervened and settled the misunderstanding.”

Anybody would have thought the intervention ended the disagreement between the teenagers; however, Lawrence still decided to confront Chiemeriem on the issue that was the bone of contention. She continues:

“Surprisingly, two hours later, Lawrence came and threatened   to deal with me. At that stage, we started exchanging words, which later resulted into a scuffle. I ran into our house and took a kitchen knife as a way of making him back off.   Unfortunately, while my elder brother was pleading with him not to fight with me since I am only a girl, I angrily stabbed Lawrence on the chest.

“It was only after the action that I realised the gravity of what I had done. I started calling for help because I was very scared. Few people in the neighbourhood came and immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital but that was too late as he gave up the ghost.

“Sincerely, I never meant to kill him, I only intended to threaten him, but I did not know how and when I stabbed him,” She lamented tearfully.

A source at the police homicide section where the matter is currently been handled stated that it is quite pathetic, but that only a court of competent jurisdiction can determine the fate of the 17 year old Chiemeriem.
