An umbrella body, the Congress of Political Parties, CPP in Benue state has passed a vote of confidence on the Secretary to Government of the Federation, SGF Sen. George Akume for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the progress of the State and Nigeria at large.

Rising from its meeting Monday, in Makurdi the state capital, the group of registered political parties deliberated on current political developments and after careful consideration strongly condemned the activities of groups and individuals attempting to undermine the integrity of the SGF

“We are fully aware that these elements operate under the sponsorship of powerful figures hiding in the shadows. We call on these sponsors to step forward and reveal themselves so the public can identify those working against the interests of the state.

“We urge all well-meaning citizens to recognize Senator Akume’s appointment as SGF as a significant political milestone for Benue State and the North Central region and Nigeria at large. His decades of leadership—as a two-term governor, three-term senator, opposition leader, minister, and now SGF—demonstrates his commitment to governance.

“We acknowledge that the SGF’s position presents vast empowerment opportunities for the people of North Central Nigeria. We urge state governments in the region to collaborate with him for the delivery of good governance”

CPP emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among political parties and stakeholders in Benue and North Central Nigeria under the leadership of the SGF to foster regional development.

“We strongly condemn in strong terms directives allegedly issued by local government chairmen and state appointees, reportedly under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s instructions, restricting gatherings, political activities, and even disruption of thanksgiving services in churches targeted at public office holders and also the closing down of private Businesses owned by perceived political opponents”

These actions the group noted violates fundamental rights, stifle democracy, and must stop immediately

According to the political parties, the reported intimidation of the judiciary by elements within the state government is a grave threat to democracy and the rule of law saying the judiciary must be allowed to function independently and dispense justice without fear or favor.

A communiqué signed by thirteen political parties and issued to newsmen condemned the harassment and intimidation of individuals and groups who express dissenting views pointing out that the right to freedom of expression and association is non-negotiable in a democracy saying “state sponsored repression must stop”

Besides, CPP commended president Bola Tinubu for appointing a Benue son to the high office of SGF and for the substantial financial resources the federal government has allocated to the state since June 2023.

“We urge Governor Hyacinth Alia to utilize these funds effectively to deliver tangible development. He must eschew distractions and embrace cooperation with past leaders to learn from history and avoid pitfalls”

The group said it has aligned with the position of opposition leader and former governor of the state Chief Samuel Ortom who has acknowledged Sen. Akume as the undisputed political leader of Benue State and North Central Nigeria.

Political parties signatory to the resolution as contained in the communiqué are; Zenith Labour Party, ZLP All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA National Rescue Movement, NRM Boot Party, BP Action Peoples Party, APP and Allied Peoples Movement, APM

Others are African Democratic Congress, ADC, Action Alliance, AA Young Peoples Party, YPP Accord Party, AP People’s Redemption Party, PRP, People’s Democratic Party, PDP and All Progressives Congress, APC.
